The Upstreet Project: Rehabilitation and re-ablement for people with ARBD

The Upstreet Project (Elizabeth House and Artichoak Cottage) offers a supportive environment where adults with Wernicke-Korsakoff’s Syndrome, acquired brain injury, ARBD / ARBI (Alcohol-Related Brain Damage / Alcohol-Related Brain Injury), and other related conditions co-produce their plan of care and support towards re-ablement within a residential setting.

We are specialist providers of support for individuals suffering from Wernicke-Korsakoff’s syndrome (Korsakov’s) and acquired brain injury or ARBD (Alcohol-Related Brain Damage). Our clients‘ difficulties have arisen from long term excessive alcohol use with associated traumatic/non-traumatic brain injury.

22 individuals with short- and long-term rehabilitation, re-ablement and residential care as needed, are supported by our stable and professional team in two houses in close proximity in the village of Upstreet, near Canterbury in Kent: Elizabeth House and its annexe Artichoak Cottage.

Our team have been selected for their skills, life experiences and kindness, and support our clients to rebuild their lives and progress in the direction they choose, in a comfortable, clean but homely environment. We are a family-run and independent home with a very hands-on and responsive approach.

Services and support at Elizabeth House and Artichoak Cottage are holistic and designed with the client to meet each person’s specific needs. Our philosophy is that every individual has the potential to progress, no matter what their condition and background.

Each client’s progress and development programme is designed with the client him or herself and focuses on living skills (both personal and household), social skills development, active therapy and vocational training and support. Many of the people we support are keen to get back to living in the wider community and a lack of insight into how a diagnosis of ARBD might impact on a person can often be the stumbling block. We work together to make this goal of independence a viable option for the future, however long or short a time that might take. In the meantime, we strongly encourage links with the local community and assist our clients to build and maintain family links which they may have lost.
